Recent Immigration News: What Our Communities Need to Know

Be Prepared and Stay Protected — July 2025

As fear and uncertainty grow around swift immigration policy shifts, we are here to make sure that our communities stay informed. Watch the video and read the recap below; plus, follow us on social media for more frequent updates.

📌 Data Sharing: I.R.S. and I.C.E. Collaboration

One major concern right now is the potential for increased data sharing between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.). While no taxpayer data has yet been shared, there is an agreement in place and efforts underway to build a centralized database. This could allow I.C.E. to more easily access personal data like names, addresses, and I.T.I.N. numbers—especially alarming for undocumented individuals.

Key Points:

  • No data has been shared yet, but a system is being built.

  • 7 million I.T.I.N. holders could be at risk.

  • Even U.S. citizens could be affected due to the broad scope of data.

🏥 Medicaid and Immigration Enforcement

Similarly, I.C.E. has requested access to Medicaid records. This request has triggered concern across states, including Illinois, where officials have pushed back against sharing this sensitive health information.

What this means:

  • Some states may comply with data sharing; others are fighting it.

  • Illinois has filed a lawsuit citing violations of HIPAA privacy protections.

  • Everyone—regardless of immigration status—could be affected.

  • Community members are encouraged to continue accessing medical services they need. Your health should never be compromised out of fear.

📄 Temporary Protected Status (T.P.S.) Updates

Temporary Protected Status (T.P.S.) is another program facing uncertainty. Several countries have had T.P.S. terminated or altered under the current administration. It’s crucial to stay updated as court decisions and government actions evolve.

Advice from TRP:

  • Know your T.P.S. expiration date and what options you might have (like asylum or other relief).

  • Watch for updates—many lawsuits are ongoing and nothing is final.

  • Visit TRP’s Resource Hub for a regularly updated T.P.S. guide outlining the status of various countries. Download the guide (updated July 21, 2025):

🧠 Staying Grounded in Facts

It's important to move past alarming headlines and take time to understand the details behind immigration policy changes. Staying informed helps you protect yourself and your community.

Ask critical questions like:

  • Who is impacted?

  • When does this go into effect?

  • Are there legal protections in place?
